A successful season comes to an end for the West Georgia softball team as their hopes for a Gulf South Conference tournament appearance was put to rest after the top team in the nation swept the doubleheader this weekend. The Wolves needed just one win, but on Alabama-Hunstville's "Senior Day," the Chargers were too much to handle as they blanked the series by scores of 4-0 and 10-2.
UAH's Sage Woodham demonstrated her power as she allowed just three hits in six innings of work improving her season record to a perfect 19-0. Alex Lewis collected her 13th save of the year.
Freshmen Haley Dunn was charged with the loss after giving up four runs in four innings in her last appearance against the Chargers. Dunn pitched her fourth complete game but suffered the loss by allowing four runs on seven hits.
With no run support from the Wolves offense, UWG had just four hits on the afternoon. Junior centerfielder Candice Brown went 2-for-4 in Game 1 but was left stranded both times. Erica Colee and Paige Hanson also contributed a hits.
While West Georgia has posted a 1-1 tie heading to the bottom of the second inning in Game 2, critical walks and an offensive surge from the Chargers put the game out of reach quickly.
Senior Kacie Crider, who had been successful all season long, suffered the loss while pitching just 4.1 innings. Crider finishes the season 19-12.
UWG's Kim Weaver had two hits in the loss, while Colee, Brown, Kaley Sullivan, and Lindsy Kragt also contributed hits in the finale.
Even though the Wolves finished just short of postseason play, the 2009 campaign featured more success then anyone in the GSC predicted. Enjoying a school record 14-game win-streak during the middle of the season, the Wolves finished just a game out of fourth place, instead of a proposed last place. With five seniors leaving the team next season, the Wolves look forward to a productive off-season as they aim to be high contenders during the 2010 campaign.
