Expand Proposition 8 To Ban Old People From Marrying

With California enjoying the attention it is getting from the recent Proposition 8 passage and court challenges, it seems like a good time for them to start working on the next thing to stay in the headlines.

Since removing an existing civil right through public vote seems to have been a smashing success, it would appear that maybe they should capitalize on the success by expanding this anti-marriage agenda to other groups. Why not?

So this writer humbly suggests going after people over 50. This is does not mean to force people over 50 to separate; just that, once you're over 50, you can't get a NEW marriage. Sounds simple enough, and it uses the exact same arguments as Prop 8, so it makes exactly the same amount of sense.

Well, in some parts of the Bible, remarriage after divorce for any reason except adultery is equivalent to the sin of adultery, particularly in Matthew 5:32. Many people who marry over 50 are remarrying, usually after a divorce, and a large chunk of divorce cases are for reasons other than marital infidelity.

The next argument against gay marriage rights is that marriages are to create families that can raise children and gay couples can't have children without medical intervention or some other third party. Funny thing, that; most folks over 50 can't birth children either without a goodly helping of medical intervention.

Another argument was that some people might get gay married as a way to perpetrate insurance fraud like the movie, "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry." Well, it has been documented in the past, of several older couples getting married for insurance purposes; after all, older people do have high medical costs as they age, so this is a highly attractive option for some.

And finally, one argument that was pushed in a sub-textual kind of way was that gay sex is gross. Many people personally think that some older people having sex is gross, too, and is just objectionable. Now, this is not talking about Demi Moore or Pamela Anderson, who are both getting closer and closer to 50, but still looking highly attractive, same for Harrison Ford or Denzel Washington-yucky old person sex usually involves people who… well, let's just say I don't wanna name names, but most people know someone over 50 they don't want to imagine doing that.

Why don't we think of the children? Do we want them thinking about grandma and grandpa doing racy things? As well, this author doesn't want to have to explain to a child how old people 'do it', or have a child see old people making out.

Clearly, banning gay marriage makes about as much sense as banning older people from getting married. And this author hopes that the next time someone tries to raise these points in support of denying marriage rights to others that they consider how it sounds to sane people.
