Dear Students,
Happy New Year and welcome back to the University of West Georgia!
While the State of Georgia (and correspondingly UWG) faces almost unprecedented budget challenges, a burden in which we all must share, in this letter, I want to focus on the longer-term potential for greatness at UWG!
This is an exciting time for the University; we are building a destination university here, with an emphasis on academics, campus life, and new facilities, all three tied closely together.
If you have not yet been in the new academic building / Coliseum, you should do so. It is reported to be the largest indoor air-conditioned space between Birmingham and Atlanta and is certainly a reason to be enormously proud and enthusiastic. It includes academic space and a coliseum which will be used for academic convocations, commencement, athletic events, concerts, and community events. It is worthy of a first-class destination university, as are our other recent buildings such as the TLC, newer residence halls (Suites and Apartments), Campus Center, and the Callaway extension which opened in the Fall (which includes exceptional academic and lab facilities).
Construction on the Greek Village is coming along well and we expect to move students in there in the Fall.
And, the site for the new Wolves football stadium is also moving along well, and we may play in that facility next year.
We are on track for a Library expansion which will include a restoration of the Office of Speaker Thomas B. Murphy, who was a giant on the political stage in Georgia and a great friend of UWG.
And, after that, we expect new construction in Nursing and Biology.
I hope you are as proud of the University of West Georgia and its progress as I am, and I hope you have a great semester and year!
Sincerely,
Beheruz N. Sethna, Ph.D.
Professor of Business Administration, and President of the University
