One of West Georgia's finest athletes died and others were placed in intensive care, after a fatal car accident on Saturday, March 14. Willie Pitts, 21, of Tallahassee, Florida was killed after the vehicle he was traveling in hydroplaned, overturned and hit a tree on Interstate 85 in Lee County, Ala.
The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near Opelika, Ala.
Pitts was being transferred to University Hospital- Birmingham after sustaining life-threatening injuries when he went into cardiac arrest and died. Pitts was pronounced dead around 4:19 a.m. Funeral services for the rising-sophomore took place last Thursday in his hometown of Tallahassee.
Close friend and teammate, Yusuf Holloway remembers Willie as a joy to be around.
"Willie was just Willie. He was honestly one-of-a-kind. There was never one dull moment when Willie was around, no matter what the circumstance was. He was a really good guy and will be missed on and off the field," said Holloway.
Hillary Dennis, 58, driver of the vehicle, and his son, UWG's Calvin Dennis, 18, were both seriously injured in the accident and remain in intensive care at East Alabama Medical Center. Both continue the recuperation process and are expected to be released from the hospital soon.
Both Pitts and Dennis played football for the West Georgia Wolves during the 2008 season and were headed to their hometown in Tallahassee, Florida for the spring break vacation. Pitts played defensive lineman for the Wolves and Dennis plays wide receiver. Head Football Coach and interim athletic director, Darryl Dickey was reported to have immediately traveled to the hospital Sunday morning to be with Dennis after the wreck.
No charges are expected to be filed, but the accident is being further investigated by the Lee County Coroner's Office and the Opelika Post of the Alabama State Troopers.
