The Wolves Need You - Fill That Stadium!

The Wolves Need Us Cheering Them On

I’m the first person to tell anyone that I’m not the one to go to for that in-depth hardcore sports knowledge. That title goes to Mitch Gray, who is just a phenomenal guy working at our Sports Information department and doing the play-by-play each week. I just don’t know sports as well as him, but I do know enough to tell people what’s going on.

I’ll be honest with you, this football losing streak stinks. It’s no fun to be in a funk, and no one knows it better than our boys in blue on the gridiron. I know they’re busting themselves to make it happen each week, I can see the effort in their moves across the field, and when I talk to them. They’re hungry to bring home a W for the fans.

The stands this past week at the Ouachita Baptist game had plenty of folks filling them, but it wasn’t as packed as it could get. Why am I even bothering to mention this? It’s pretty simple: having a wind at your back makes the run all that easier. Who better to kick up that wind at our Wolves’ backs than the dedicated fans of UWG?

I know this is Division II ball, it’s not the big marquee stuff on ESPN or ABC and you probably won’t see the Wolves on the highlight reel at Sportscenter. That doesn’t really matter, though. I see a lot of guys going to UWG classes wearing gear for other schools and though I’m certainly not going to say I’m innocent, given my own preference for Georgia Tech, I wonder what this says about our “team spirit”, so to speak.

We got a “If you build it, they will come” problem here—they want to bring home a big win to the fans, but if the fans aren’t 100% there, how can they do it?

So, I say, we’re going to have to build “it”. I’m calling on everyone reading this piece right now to do two things. Odds are, most of the people reading this don’t know me, and I probably don’t know you—don’t do these things for me, do them for UWG.

One, clear your schedule for the next home game on the 8th of October. That means, scrawl it on your calendar, put it in Microsoft Outlook, type it in your Blackberry, or tap it in your iPhone. Don’t forget. Plan to be there and fill that stadium up, and bring all the energy you’ve got.

Two, give this article to a friend, tell him you’ll give them a ride to the game or go with them on the shuttle. If you’ve been at this school for a couple years, you paid for this stadium, you might as well go and get your money’s worth and see a game.

If you’re new to the school, been here for a while and never gone to a game, or even if you’re a die-hard fan, we need everyone out there giving the Wolves every little bit they can get. I myself am the kind of person who truly believes that every person in the game makes a difference. This is true the most at home where the fans can really shake the confidence of the away team.

So, come on, West Georgia: Students, Faculty, Staff… heck, even random people who loiter around campus, get down to the game October 8th and let’s make it happen!
